how to make a bodysurfing handplane

Workshops are held at

"In all honesty: One of the best workshops I've taken part in. I'm certainly not an expert wood-worker (novice might even be generous) but importantly, at no stage did I feel that that was a disadvantage. Rikki's manner and delivery is great; made me feel comfortable enough to ask questions and step outside my comfort zone with tools and skills. The workshop is a great gift for anyone that loves the beach and loves having a bash in the surf, wants to refine their style between the flags or for someone wanting to step up their Whomp skills and share in the stoke of it! Cheers!"
"I just wanted to send you a quick note to thank you for the amazing experience in the workshop. With 3 generations attending, myself, my 2 kids (10 and 8) and my dad, we all had a ball. We can’t stop talking about it, from the moment we walked in we felt welcomed. Rikki, the handplanes we have produced are something we will now have forever as a family. There is something special about making something yourself.
Well done, and once again thank you."
"I Traveled over from NZ to do the Handplane course not knowing what to expect. After entering the studio, i was greeted by Rikki and his wife Lucy and made very welcome and soon we were underway with the designing. We tailored our handplanes to the waves we like to surf and starting with just a timber blank, we were guided through the cutting, shaping and sanding of a handplane and we were left with a work of art that we were all very excited to use in the surf. What a day! I am stoked with what i had made."

"A really enjoyable experience with a great group of people. I really enjoyed getting on the tools, creating something that not only looks great but is an absolute blast to use out in the waves. Not that I'm a good surfer (in fact quite the opposite) but not sure when I'll ever lug my surf board around again when I have the hand plane.
The available snacks were delicious, the pub lunch was outstanding, and the end result was a really fantastic day.
Would not have changed a thing!"
"An amazing day with WAW Handplanes! I did something today i never thought i would be able to do so thank you! Cannot wait to use my new handplane in the Waves. Would highly recommend!"
"The handplane workshop was a wonderful experience. It combined a meeting of people who love the ocean with learning, creativity and the opportunity to craft something of beauty. I thought the way you explained the different design options and then let us tailor our choices to our own style was excellent. You demonstrated the techniques needed with each stage and tool but allowed us to learn by doing. You are a natural teacher and guide.
We all appreciated the chance to meet, talk over coffee and a celebratory beer. This added to the fun by adding a social dimension and as you said there is rarely an asshole to be found amongst body surfers!
There is little I would do differently other than come again and make another one!"
"Overall the day was fantastic. The size of the workshop was good, limiting the numbers gave everyone ample time to create their board, whilst getting plenty of supervision from yourself. I found the times you did help were great as it allowed me to modify what I thought was 'right' and create a better outcome. The principles of shaping and how these are applied to hand planes was invaluable. I have made a few hand planes before but nothing like the quality I made on that day.
As I mentioned I enjoyed the pace of the day as I didn't feel rushed and I could still make a quality hand board. The feedback from family and friends on what I did make only emphasises this point. The group dynamic was good on the day too and this added to the whole experience
"I had a blast at this workshop, as a tradie i already knew my way around the tools but it was so great to get Rikki's advice and experience in tailoring a handplane to the waves i like to surf. I will have to come back when i want to another one!"
